In 2025, Italian cuisine was officially inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO—a recognition that celebrates far more than recipes. It honors a living cultural expression where flavors, gestures, stories, and traditions converge, transforming every meal into a shared language of identity, memory, and belonging. In New Delhi, the decision was approved unanimously, affirming that the culinary heritage of Italy is not only nourishment, but culture, history, and future.

A Living Heritage of Flavors and Traditions
Defined as a cultural and social blend of culinary practices, Italian cooking is rooted in artisanal techniques, respect for raw ingredients, and an intimate relationship with food. It is a practice shaped by anti-waste traditions, seasonal awareness, and biocultural diversity—principles that reflect a deep harmony between people, land, and time. Each dish carries knowledge accumulated across generations, passed from grandparents to grandchildren, from kitchens to classrooms, ensuring that skills and stories remain alive.

More Than Cuisine: A Language of Connection
Italian cooking is a communal ritual. It lives in homes, schools, festivals, and celebrations, where people of all ages exchange recipes, advice, and memories.
